Amazon Corporate Counsel, Japan Digital & Devices Legal in Tokyo, Japan

Amazon’s Japan Digital & Devices Legal team is looking for a smart, motivated attorney to join our team. This position, based in Tokyo, will support Amazon’s growing and evolving media business in Japan. You will serve as an attorney responsible for counseling the business on a broad range of commercial and regulatory matters and structuring, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements including procurement and content acquisition agreements for the distribution of media products and digital contents through our services. You will provide day-to-day advice in a wide range of legal areas, including e-commerce, copyright, content risk management/moderation, marketing, privacy, regulatory compliance, new feature/service development and commercial agreements.

The attorney will be an integral part of the business and will need to be comfortable providing counsel directly to senior leadership both on legal and business issues. The attorney will also work closely with US and other international legal and business teams worldwide.

The successful candidate must be inquisitive, enthusiastic about technology, enjoy working hard and being continually challenged, and demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations. The successful candidate will be client-service oriented, and be able to think big while also paying great attention to detail on tight deadlines. The successful candidate will also be able to prioritize appropriately and easily switch gears without sacrificing quality of work, maintain a high level of professionalism, integrity, and discretion in handling confidential information, and have the ability to work well with people at all levels inside and outside Amazon.

Basic Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice law in Japan and/or other jurisdiction.

  • 7-12 years of legal experience (with at least three years at a leading global law firm and/or in-house at a major multinational corporation).

  • Excellent ability to communicate orally and in writing, draft and negotiate agreements in English and Japanese.

  • Experience supporting commercial transactions, licensing or other intellectual property work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Outstanding legal and business judgment.

  • Proven ability to work independently in a fast paced environment.

  • The ability to function as part of a global legal team.

  • Experience with the publishing industry is a plus.
