Amazon Technical Program Manager, Data Center Life Cycle in Seattle, Washington

Description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

The Core Networking team is looking for a Technical Program Manager to join our Data Center Life Cycle (DCLC) team. As a Technical Program Manager, you will be responsible for defining and managing the processes to refresh the network of AWS data centers and to turn down the network of AWS data centers to be exited, as well as lead projects in both spaces.

AWS Core Networking is focused on building Data Centers and the network that allows Data Centers to function efficiently. They own the solutions that allow racks to be aggregated and Data Centers to be interconnected. Core Networking's goal is to balance efficiency, performance and reliability to allow customers access to their applications and data.

Amazon’s network is a key differentiator for Amazon Web Services (AWS), enabling the global operation of thousands of applications across hundreds of thousands of servers worldwide. The AWS Networking team develops and operates the network platform for all of Amazon, including e-commerce products and cloud computing solutions. This platform is industry-leading for its efficiency, throughput and reliability, and it is critical to the success of hundreds of thousands of AWS customers. Are you ready to own the network availability for the largest cloud network on the planet? With Amazon Web Services, our goal is to become “The Infrastructure Platform” to the world. Our customers demand the highest quality and reliability for their services. As we expand at a tremendous rate across all of our services, it is our responsibility to maintain that quality and reliability. We look for innovative ways to automate the operation of our network and drive complex issues to resolution.

Our engineers, managers and leaders are innovators at heart; come join us and become integral to the technology company that is the past, present, and future of real Cloud Computing.

Key job responsibilities

• Collaborate with experienced cross-disciplinary Amazonians to conceive, design and test the processes required to refresh the network of a data centre and to turn down the network of a data centre to be exited.

• Execute these processes in concrete projects and coordinate impacted network and infra teams to ensure project success.

• Define performance metrics for these processes, track them and tune/optimize the processes when required.

• Ensure operational excellence, namely that all activities are done safely with no impact to the customer traffic.

• Determine parts that can be automated and engage the software development engineers to implement such an automation.

A day in the life

On an everyday basis as part of our team, you have the unique opportunity to understand the growing AWS network and our internal customers’ requirements. You will work with our internal stakeholders to select the data centers whose network require refresh to sustain the evolving business needs, and the data centers that require an exit. You will define the network refresh process, from design to deployment, and evolve it as other AWS network fabric teams define new solutions. You will define and implement the changes needed in AWS network to safely exit a data center. You will design and implement processes and mechanisms that both help the team to deliver business impact to the organization in a systemic way, while also helping to raise the bar on our operational excellence.

Operating at the scale we do, there is no blueprint for how to do what we do, which encourages our engineers to identify and develop simple solutions to complex problems. We encourage durable solutions that look around corners while taking into consideration our customer needs from a cost, performance, and reliability perspective. We work closely with our internal partners that design, build and operate the network to ensure that our solutions meet their needs and exceed their expectations. We automate processes whenever we can, to increase the number and speed of our deliveries and avoid human-caused errors.

About the team

Within AWS Networking, the DC Life Cycle (DCLC) team owns the design and delivery of new network fabrics to refresh existing Data Centers, as well as the logical decommissioning of the obsolete network both in these refreshed Data Centers and in Data Centers selected for exit. The ownership of these processes includes their end-to-end automation.
