Description

The Amazon Capacity and Topology team determines how many, what kind, and where to place new buildings for Amazon's supply chain worldwide. These facilities range from million-square-foot fulfillment centers with thousands of robots down to inner-city Prime Now facilities serving orders to be fulfilled within an hour. Each year we spend billions on these facilities and expect high-impact results from the network built upon them. That network is expanding faster than ever. This team owns the systems that are critical for managing capacity in Amazon's network for all retail customers on Amazon.com. As a highly talented Software Development Manager (SDM), you will lead a team of engineers to design, build, and productionalize tools to fully automate our network topology decisions, utilizing Amazon's massive data, sophisticated algorithms and cloud computation infrastructure (AWS). You'll develop your team of highly motivated and talented builders who can collaborate with product managers, technical specialists, and scientists across the company. You will mentor your team on best practices for building quality software and raising the bar on operational excellence. We are looking for great leaders who think big but enjoy diving deep where required, and who take pride in solving customer problems. You will work closely with senior leaders, scientists, engineers, and business teams worldwide to implement products that use advanced machine learning/mathematical and economic models and algorithms. You are customer obsessed, have good communication skills and are comfortable influencing up and down a large organization, especially at senior levels. You will guide your team to work collaboratively with stakeholders that are spread across locations.

Define the long-term vision, strategy, and goals for your team

• Manage a development team responsible for the technology at the core of Amazon's network topology

• Manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team within an Agile/Scrum environment

• Prioritize, plan projects and features, manage partners, and track external commitments

• Deliver step-change improvements to our suite of tools while keeping an extremely high bar on customer trust

• Foster the career development of your direct reports.

In this role, you will become an expert in the management of the most sophisticated supply chain in the world and develop a deep understanding of Amazon's retail business. You will design and architect systems and expand your technical depth and breadth while defining and driving key aspects of the customer experience on Amazon.com. You will influence the design of our core fulfillment network across multiple organizations and drive decisions with billion-dollar impact to Amazon’s business.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of engineering experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

  • Experience delivering products against plan in a fast-paced, multi-disciplined, distributed-responsibility and often ambiguous environment

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

  • Experience with delivering software projects using Agile / Scrum methodologies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

  • Experience managing a team of high calibre Software Engineers developing complex, world class, scalable software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers

  • B.Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related technical discipline

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
