Amazon Software Development Manager, Amazon Ads - API Team in New York, New York

Come help us to build a world-class Public API as part of one of Amazon's fastest growing strategic businesses: Advertising. Our APIs provide self-service low-latency campaign management functionality for Sponsored Ads and Display Ads world-wide at massive scale. We're looking for a Software Development Manager to lead the development of the next generation of our most widely used and business critical APIs.

Key job responsibilities

You will be responsible for the full software development lifecycle of our next generation public APIs. This means partnering with feature teams across the org to define and implement common models across our entire API surface area. Initially this means directly building and launching our most critical APIs using a shared set of patterns. Over time, we will shift our focus to build tooling to support partner teams building their own APIs following our shared patterns.

Candidates for this position should have strong engineering fundamentals as well as real-world experience. You will showcase diverse architectural approaches and design patterns in your technical design. Think big and stay informed about industry standards in Ad tech space. Communicate effectively across all leadership levels verbally and in writing. Lead deep technical discussions with senior engineers, collaborating to solve challenging problems. You will be able to quickly grasp new systems and provide valuable consultation.

A day in the life

In this role, you are responsible for making sure your team delivers on its goals while maintaining a high quality bar in the code we build and helping your engineers grow in their careers. Delivering on our mission requires close collaboration with a myriad of stakeholders both technical and non-technical. It also requires the ability to deeply understand your team’s tech stack and overall technical strategy. This role includes significant ambiguity as we work to align a new SDLC around the org with more focus on code reusability.

About the team

We are responsible for defining how all Amazon Ads features are surfaced to customers through our public APIs. We are champions of Domain Driven Development and API-first around the organization, and obsess over making our APIs a delight to integrate with. Our mission is to make Amazon Ads APIs easy for customers to integrate with, and easy for internal teams to extend. We do this by promoting code reuse internally and externally to make sure no one has to reinvent the wheel when we launch new functionality.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
