Amazon Senior Manager ANZ, Infrastructure, Energy and Sustainability Policy, AWS ANZ Public Policy in Melbourne, Australia

Would you like to be part of a public policy team that is helping drive the adoption of cloud computing in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ)? Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a leading provider of cloud computing services, providing IT infrastructure offerings such as on-demand compute capacity, storage, content delivery, database services and more. The AWS Public Policy team is at the forefront of helping the company and its customers maximize the benefits of cloud computing by removing regulatory and policy blockers to cloud adoption. It also supports and facilitates expansion of cloud infrastructure and services.

AWS is looking for a talented, innovative, and well-connected individual to drive policy advocacy strategy and represent AWS across ANZ before government (federal, state and local), policymakers and regulators in the various industries that impact the data center infrastructure, energy and sustainability sectors. The successful candidate will be responsible for advocating for favorable policies and regulations to promote AWS’ business interests in these sectors. They will also support AWS telecoms policy issues in ANZ and across APJ for no more than 10% of their time.

This Australia-based position (other locations in ANZ considered) reports to the AWS Head of Public Policy for ANZ, and includes the following responsibilities:

• Cloud Infrastructure: across ANZ, drive policy strategy and advocacy beneficial to AWS in all areas related to AWS buildout of its data centers and related cloud physical infrastructure – regions, local zones, at all levels of government (federal, state, local). This would include but not be limited to expansion of existing infrastructure; launch of new infrastructure, interactions with govts around required permitting; interactions with govts around networking and telco elements of our cloud infrastructure; work done in conjunction with the AWS InCommunities team; and all other policy matters related to data center infrastructure.

• Energy: across ANZ, drive policy strategy and advocacy beneficial to AWS in all areas related to AWS consumption of energy to power its data centers and provide services to customers. This would include but not be limited to interactions with ANZ energy regulators; framing of energy consumption and demand with regulators and stakeholders,

• Sustainability: across ANZ, drive policy strategy and advocacy beneficial to AWS in all areas related to our sustainability story. This would include but not be limited to our use of renewable energy and framing that with regulators and stakeholders; how our data centers are energy efficient and framing that with regulators and stakeholders; our use of water to cool data center infrastructure; wider sustainability regulation such as climate-related disclosure rules.

• Telco: the role will also devote not more than 10% of its time to telco policy issues in ANZ and across APJ, on a priority basis.

• Work done: Among other things, the role will create external messaging and narratives around AWS’ cloud infrastructure, energy and sustainability policy priorities. It will also draft AWS policy position papers and represent the views of AWS before governments, regulatory, and legislative bodies.

The successful candidate must be inquisitive, enthusiastic about technology, enjoy being continually challenged, and demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous situations. They should have public policy experience in a relevant technology or cloud infrastructure industry. This candidate must be able to point to successful advocacy outcomes in that industry.


Our team operates out of our fabulous CBD office (conveniently located near many transportation options), and from home (during COVID-19) leveraging technology.

Basic Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• 10+ years of experience representing a large company or association in the technology or cloud infrastructure industry, a technology or infrastructure/energy policymaker or regulator, with significant experience running public policy and/or regulatory advocacy efforts;

• A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (Law, Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, etc.);

• Fluent written and spoken English.

• Highly effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated ability to effectively and comfortably interact at highest corporate, political and regulatory levels;

• Ability to maintain highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality and integrity, with a strong professional reputation in the industry;

• A self-starter with proven track record of successfully working with various functional groups across an organization and different cultures, in addition to the ability to work independently;

• Ability to identify and understand key technical aspects in legislative and regulatory proposals, understand business implications, and synthesize policy documents for internal and external stakeholders;

• Ability to debate and negotiate with others, including strong judgment/decision-making skills while retaining flexibility as required;

• Demonstrated ability to build and foster effective relationships and networks with others.
