Amazon Public Policy Lead, Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Description

Would you like to be part of a public policy team that is driving the adoption of cloud computing in Southeast Asia? The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Public Policy team is at the forefront of helping customers maximize the benefits of cloud computing by removing regulatory and political blockers to cloud adoption. We do this by working with governments as they develop and revise policies related to the digital economy, including cloud first policies, data protection regulations, outsourcing guidelines, cyber security policies, tax policy, and over the top regulations.

AWS is looking for a talented, innovative, and well-connected individual to represent AWS in Malaysia before policymakers that are strategically important to the AWS business. The successful candidate will proactively build relationships with key policymakers, politicians and influencers. You will develop and execute strategies that mitigate policy risks to the business, as well as advance strategic business opportunities in these market segments. This position will also lead AWS’s participation in strategic business associations and coalitions in Malaysia. You will become familiar with all aspects of AWS’s business, and interface directly with the business units in the region. This Kuala Lumpur-based public policy and government affairs position, which reports to the Head of Public Policy for Singapore and Malaysia and is part of the Asia-Pacific and Japan Public Policy team, shall:

• Develop and implement government engagement and policy campaigns for AWS in Malaysia that help facilitate an enabling environment for cloud adoption in the country;

• Assess and communicate potential regulatory threats and government sector business opportunities, develop mitigation or enhancement strategies and policy positions, and coordinate external advocacy and outreach programs and key initiatives;

• Advance the company’s policy positions directly and through industry associations to enable a transparent and technology-friendly regulatory environment;

• Facilitate high-level meetings between AWS executives and key stakeholders, including senior government officials, regulators, industry associations and alliance partners to promote advocacy positions;

• Raise awareness among government officials, policymakers and regulators on the cloud value proposition in regulated industries, such as but not limited to health, energy, telecommunications, and the financial services sector;

• Work collaboratively and transparently with the AWS business units to ensure alignment between core business priorities, public policy goals and “go to market” strategies;

• Advise the AWS business (including those with limited familiarity with Malaysia) on how to navigate and manage regulatory and political risk in Malaysia;

• Determine, maintain and staff appropriate corporate membership opportunities in industry associations/coalitions on behalf of AWS, and ensure appropriate utilization of high judgment, high integrity outside consultants.

The successful candidate must be inquisitive, enthusiastic about technology, enjoy working hard and being continually challenged, and demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations.

Basic Qualifications

• 8 - 10 years of experience representing a large company or association before national and local policymakers, preferably but not necessarily in the tech industry.

• A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Law, Political Science, Public Policy, Public Affairs, Economic Development).

• Fluent in written and spoken English and Bahasa Melayu.

Preferred Qualifications

• Excellent understanding of the country’s political landscape at a national, provincial and local level. Able to dive deep on political, legislative and regulatory trends that may impact AWS businesses, and to synthesize policy documents for internal and external customers.

• A strong understanding of IT issues in the country (such as cloud computing, cyber security, data protection, trade, taxes, and e-commerce).

• Demonstrated track-record of achieving meaningful changes to the legislative and regulatory environment through public policy advocacy, including engaging with government ministries and agencies in ICT, financial services, health, energy regulators, and policy makers at the executive and working levels.

• Ability to dive deep on regulations by understanding how legislative and regulatory proposals may impact the AWS business, and synthesize policy documents for internal and external customers.

• Highly effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, and demonstrated ability to effectively interact at highest corporate and political levels.

• Inquisitive, enthusiastic about technology, and able to demonstrate sound judgment in ambiguous situations; self-starter that can use good judgment and resourcefulness to advance public policy priorities.

• Effective research and analytical skills to develop and support policy positions.

• Effective time-management skills, including ability to prioritize and manage multiple workstreams.

• Maintain highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality and integrity, with a strong professional reputation in the industry.
