Amazon Web Services (AWS) Direct Connect is looking for a highly skilled senior software developer to join our team in Northern Virginia. The AWS Direct Connect team delivers solutions that make it easy for customers to establish a dedicated network connection from their premises to the AWS cloud. These connections help to reduce network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections. AWS Direct Connect is currently available in more than 100 locations located in 28 countries.

This position will be responsible for designing the system, developing software, and supporting the next generation of the AWS Direct Connect service.

The opportunity:

This position will be part of our team in the Herndon, VA office. The team builds and maintains the software for customers to route between their On-Premise networks and their AWS VPCs. We code in Kotlin, Go, Python, and more to create distributed computing solutions for our service. Our innovative systems include high efficient and large scale platforms built on Amazon's AWS cloud computing infrastructure.

Our engineers work to create Software Defined Networking (SDN) solutions which support our customers unique scaling and availability needs. Our components create our customer’s route tables and propagate them throughout AWS’s data plane and control plane. We operate at very large scale on critical customer workloads, so a passion for operational excellence is essential. Candidates must be comfortable working within a fast-moving environment and be eager to embrace ownership and accountability.

Key job responsibilities

This position on the Direct Connect team will be designing and developing new SDN solutions for our customers. You'll be coming in on the ground floor as we build these exciting new services for our enterprise customers to grow their hybrid cloud solutions tailored to their specific network needs and ensuring durability, resiliency, speed and high availability.

• Design and implement long-term architectures for AWS Direct Connect

• Own and continuously improve the team’s software stack

A day in the life

Our engineers develop high performance, highly available software which handles routing for our customers. We design, build infrastructure, write code, test, deploy, monitor, and solve problems. Any given day you may be writing code to implement new features, designing our software architecture to create reliable systems, learning about new networking concepts so we can better serve our customers. We have lots of opportunity to influence the product and architecture.

Basic Qualifications

• 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

• 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience

• 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

• Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

• Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design

• Experience leading the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
