Grid Strategy Manager – EMEA, AWS Energy Team (Level 7)

Job description: As part of AWS’ EMEA Energy & Water team, the AWS Infrastructure Energy Team (IET) for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) is looking for a results-oriented individual to join in the role of Grid Strategy Manager. This role owns setting the strategic direction with regard to where we locate, how we interconnect and how we operate our fleet of data centers across the power grids on which we depend. The role’s scope extends to analysing, developing and implementing business, supply chain and operational strategies in partnership with our internal and external partner teams and organisations. The ultimate deliverable of the role is to ensure that access to secure, resilient and scalable power is maintained so as not to constrain AWS business growth for our customers.

With a proven record in power engineering and delivery, complemented by a robust project management skill-set, you will own the origination, execution and delivery of large-scale power infrastructure projects across EMEA, in partnership with regional experts. This will see you look round corners in anticipation of risks and barriers to growth, deep diving the quality of the power system and the underpinning generation and developing strategies to navigate constraints in terms of access to power. By delivering on the strategies you develop, you will enable scalable future growth to support the expansion of AWS Cloud, enabling our customers to innovate faster.

In conjunction with partner teams, the successful candidate will cultivate business and technical relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including grid and electricity utilities, supply chain partners, regulators and policymakers to ensure that power and grid infrastructure can be delivered in a timely and economic manner to support AWS’s EMEA infrastructure expansion.

Key job responsibilities

• Working with internal engineering, real estate and planning teams, lead the development and execution of a comprehensive power growth strategy for AWS’s EMEA data centers for new and existing regions

• Identify risks in delivery and operation of power grids and identify appropriate mitigations in collaboration with partner teams

• Identify opportunities for AWS to stimulate the transition to cleaner power grids in delivery of growth to support our customers across EMEA

• Identify and develop cost saving projects and initiatives related to grid and network infrastructure

• Collaborate with electricity utilities and other external stakeholders to develop strategies that support AWS’s expansion in EMEA

• Develop and execute strategies that leverage capital projects (utility grid connections, HV substations, energy storage etc.) to accelerate delivery of power capacity and optimise total cost of ownership

• Work with AWS’s Public Policy team to develop policies and guidelines that enable broader AWS strategies and objectives

Basic Qualifications

Basic qualifications

• • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Power Engineering or other relevant technical field or equivalent professional or technical qualification

• Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent

• 10-15 years track record working in electric utility/energy industry in an engineering, project or technical role including but not limited to design, development and delivery of HV/MV electrical infrastructure projects, extensive project management experience, deep understanding of health & safety standards across EMEA with regard to delivery of electricity infrastructure, , deep understanding of grid application and connections process and the broader policy and regulatory context of electricity grids, understanding of grid codes and relevant regulatory models

• Proven track record of developing strategies that inform and influence business direction, growth and leadership decisions at an organizational level

• Exceptional analytical skillset to analyse the implications of electrical grid infrastructure systems and associated regulations on business goals and deliverables

• Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects requiring frequent communication, organization, time management and problem-solving skills

• Proven track record for cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders, senior executives and stakeholders in high-impact situations, delivering high customer satisfaction

• Strong communication skills and a passionate self-starter

• International business experience

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in relevant discipline (MBA/MS)

• Experience designing HV / MV electric infrastructure

• Experience and understanding of the permitting process and compliance requirements

• Experience of IT infrastructure, data centres and cloud services

• Ability to converse in Spanish, German, French, Swedish or Italian is advantageous
