The Role:

We are looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our team in building highly visible, robust automation tools and framework to tackle complex and hard to solve problems.

As a hands-on SDET, you will make a large impact on our dynamic, fast moving Amazon Dash Cart team by improving efficiency and approach to testing. Working backwards from customer needs, you will identify the right sets of tools to build to achieve the best quality and customer experience. You will lead test automation efforts for critical and complex technical projects spanning multiple software and hardware teams and merchants. You will be responsible for driving improvements in test tools, test environments and reporting mechanisms as well as influence the implementation of the right solutions.

As a Software Development champion on the engineering team, you will own the vision for test infrastructures, build frameworks that allow developers to easily write reliable tests, and invent new mechanisms for ensuring that every change we make can be deployed safely and quickly. You will help solve our most difficult challenges, and you will coach other engineers to foster a culture of relentless high-standards.

The ideal candidate for this role has a strong track record and proficiency in building efficient and innovative test tools. They are a pragmatic problem-solver with high judgment who brings an experienced perspective to balance quality and strategy trade-offs to meet the needs of Amazon Dash Cart teams, projects, and products. They will bring clarity to complexity, probing assumptions, illuminating pitfalls with data, and fostering shared understanding. They have specialized knowledge analyzing test procedures, inspecting architectures and developing test infrastructure and tools that provide confidence in product quality.

Key job responsibilities

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.

  • Envision, design and develop tools, frameworks and testing infrastructure to facilitate the testing by multiple teams and cross-functional engineers. This includes analyzing requirements, assessing testability, identifying automation opportunities and implementing them for projects where the work will be run by multiple businesses in parallel.

  • Lead and actively participate in design review, test planning and tools reviews, aligning teams across organization towards coherent test tool strategy.

  • Lead effort towards simplifying test tools and technologies in terms of efficiency, effectiveness stability, extensibility, and scalability.

  • Demonstrated ability to own, design, lead and implement test strategies for complex applications and deployment topologies.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe software product features, and create/explain/defend technical designs.

About the team

The Team:

The Amazon Dash Cart team is responsible for building new smart shopping cart that makes grocery trips quick and safe by allowing shoppers to skip the checkout line. We started off with Amazon Fresh Stores (AFS), and have expanded to Whole Foods Market (WFM) and beyond. As we get ready to launch new updates that will surprise and delight our shoppers, we are looking to expand our organization to better keep a high quality bar for our customers.

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years of test automation frameworks and tools building experience

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development testing experience

  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of overall system architecture, scalability, reliability, and performance in a database environment

  • Experience with security in service-oriented architectures and web services

  • Experience debugging, diagnosing, and troubleshooting complex, production software issues

  • Experience with web services and REST APIs

  • Experience designing or supporting low-maintenance automation frameworks
