As an Applied Scientist, you will be driving prototypes, projects and solutions in the fields of computer vision, machine learning and image optimisation. Our work sits right at the intersection of research and engineering and we are delivering products with real world impact for Amazon Retail Experiences.

Key job responsibilities

  • Research, design, implement and evaluate novel computer vision algorithms

  • Work on large-scale datasets, creating scalable, robust and accurate computer vision systems for various applications

  • Collaborate closely with other scientists and engineers to drive systems from prototyping to production level

  • Collaborate with teams across the world

  • Engage with the scientific community (within Amazon and beyond)

  • Think outside the box and identify novel opportunities for a better customer experience

Your work will impact the shopping experience for millions of Amazon customers every day. Your ideas allow a fast path to production at scale and help us reshape the way we think about images at Amazon.

A day in the life

Your day will be a mix of experimentation, coding and communication. You discuss your ideas and plans with your peers and other stakeholders, train and evaluate computer vision and machine learning models, and work on demos, prototypes and production code. You work closely with engineers and product managers to solve impactful business problems related to images at Amazon. You will be able to interact with the Amazon science community, for example through our internal machine learning conferences. Finally, you will have access to Amazon's extensive offerings for mentoring and training to keep learning and growing.

About the team

The Content Systems Science and Engineering team develops foundational computer vision capabilities for the billions of images owned by Amazon. Our systems power technologies ranging from content moderation and product classification to marketing optimization and recommendation systems.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Berlin, BE, DEU

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD, or a Master's degree and experience in CS, CE, ML or related field

  • Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals

  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language

  • Experience developing and implementing deep learning algorithms, particularly with respect to computer vision algorithms

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Unix/Linux

  • Experience in professional software development

  • Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application

  • Experience in any of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing
