The Supply Chain Optimization Technologies (SCOT) group is seeking a Principal Applied Scientist to join our Multi-discplinary science team. Supply Chain Optimization Technologies (SCOT) owns Amazon’s global inventory planning systems. We decide what, when, where, and how much we should inbound to meet Amazon’s business goals and to make our customers happy. We decide how to place and move inventory within Amazon’s fulfillment network. We do this for hundreds of millions of items and hundreds of product lines worth billions of dollars of world-wide. You will lead the design of machine learning models that scale to very large quantities of data, and serve high-scale low-latency recommendations to all customers worldwide. You will embody scientific rigor, designing and executing experiments to demonstrate the technical efficacy and business value of your methods. You will work alongside a science team to delight customers by aiding in recommendations relevancy, and raise the profile of Amazon as a global leader in machine learning.

Key job responsibilities

  • Design, implement and evaluate models, agents and software prototypes

  • Technical leadership for a group of highly motivated and talented scientists

  • Engage key business stakeholders and scientists to surface opportunities for improvement and identify business requirements.

  • Work closely with a senior science advisor, collaborate with other scientists and engineers, and be part of Amazon’s vibrant and diverse global science community.

  • Raise the bar of scientific research by innovating and publishing high quality reports

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in one of the following disciplines: Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Applied Math or a related quantitative field

  • Publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals in one of these areas: reinforcement learning, deep learning, and machine learning

  • Fluency in Python, SQL or similar scripting languages and skilled at Java, C++, or other programing languages.

  • Strong algorithm development experience

  • Depth and breadth in state-of-the-art machine learning technologies

  • Strong prior experience with mentorship and/or management of senior scientists and engineers.

  • Ability to convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts

  • Ability to distill problem definitions, models, and constraints from informal business requirements

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and competing objectives

  • Experience designing and supporting large-scale distributed systems in a production

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep expertise in Machine Learning

  • Knowledge of the latest trends in related areas in Machine Learning and LLM

  • Proven track record of innovation in creating novel algorithms and advancing the state of the art

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $179,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $309,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
