Amazon Sr. UX Researcher, Mechatronics & Sustainable Packaging (MSP) in Barrhaven, Ontario

Description

Amazon's Mechatronics & Sustainable Packaging (MSP) software and science team delivers technologies that improve customer experience (CX) by reducing packaging waste, lowering our cost to serve, and demonstrating Amazon’s commitment to the Climate Pledge. Our products and programs are public facing and provide a unique opportunity to interact with end customers on every order.

We are seeking a UX Research Lead who is passionate about the intersection of the physical and virtual worlds, reaching beyond what is shown on a screen to include the physical environment, building layout, equipment, work processes – anything and everything that impacts how work inside our fulfillment centers gets done as well as our consumer and seller experiences. In this role, you’ll have a significant impact on our business as you take a leadership role in setting the research strategy and direction for a new collection of products and services.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced user research leader interested in pushing the boundaries of user research in an Agile product development environment; a problem-solver, self-learner, and self-starter with a deep understanding of user research methods and best practices and a nimble, creative, and pragmatic approach.

Key job responsibilities

As a Senior UX Researcher, you will:

• Serve as the user research lead within the MSP team, working with leaders to define and build MSP’s global user research discipline.

• Mentor and coach UX researchers, as well as designers and other MSP team members, in user research methodologies, trends, and best practices.

• Build relationships across teams and countries, promote collaboration and efficiency, and raise the user research bar to improve the packaging workflows within our operations facilities as well as the end user customer experience for Amazon sellers and consumers.

• Work closely with a cross-functional team of designers, product managers, and engineers to identify research topics and build/execute research roadmaps.

• Plan and execute both formative and evaluative studies using a variety of methods.

• Communicate results, insights, and recommendations, advocating on behalf of our customers and influencing stakeholders to positively impact experiences within Amazon’s global operations network.

A day in the life

This is an early stage initiative with a fast-paced, highly collaborative start-up like environment inside Amazon. To be successful you need to be flexible and entrepreneurial. You are a true owner – you are hands on and you lead by example. You acquire expertise as needed, iterate and adapt your approach as you learn more. You are deeply interested in pragmatic problem solving as well as taking risks in pioneering new innovations.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in experimental psychology, cognitive science, human computer interaction or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• 7+ years of hands-on experience conducting user research in an applied setting, including end-to-end experience with all aspects of research (e.g., study design, recruiting, moderation, analysis, reporting) and 2+ years of experience working as a user research lead in a multiple researcher setting and/or managing a user research team.

• Experience with a full range of research methods: qualitative and quantitative, attitudinal and behavioral, with deep expertise in one or more areas. Includes in-person lab and field studies, remote moderated and unmoderated studies, research for multiple devices and form factors, and a strong grasp of quantitative data analysis and statistics.

• Online portfolio of work samples demonstrating ability to plan and execute impactful user research, and to extract actionable insights from qualitative and quantitative data.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to work efficiently and demonstrate a bias for action in a fast-paced, often ambiguous environment. Start-up experience is a plus.

• Experience working in a collaborative team, partnering closely with designers, product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders to plan and execute user research, create actionable insights, and drive product improvements. Experience in Agile development environments is a plus.

• Fluency in human-centered design processes, service design, and consumer research.

• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present a compelling case for research and data-driven decision-making.

• Ability to define, manage, and prioritize your own work, juggling multiple projects, possibly with competing deadlines.

• An unfailing passion and capacity to advocate on behalf of our users/customers.

• Passion for the role of user research within an organization and the ability to drive design thinking.

• Passion for learning and innovation, balanced with business needs and customer expectations.

• UX/UI design expertise; experience with UI and workflow prototyping tools.

• Master's degree in experimental psychology, cognitive science, human computer interaction or related discipline.

• Willingness to travel (up to 25%) locally, domestically, and internationally as needed for research, collaboration, and planning.
